The monument house was completed in 1981 for the Bulgarian Communist Party, on a 1,432-metre peak that already held an 1868 battle memorial and the site of the 1891 meeting at which Bulgarian socialism was founded. It has been closed since 1989 and is viewed from the outside while conservation work proceeds in stages.
