Every operator in Sofia drives the same two hours to the same UNESCO courtyard. What separates the days is the second stop — Boyana Church, the Seven Lakes, a cave under the ridge, or an open-air mineral pool on the way home.
Rila Monastery and Boyana Church, one day
The monastery courtyard first, while it is still quiet, then the thirteenth-century frescoes at Boyana on the way back into Sofia. It is the cheapest full day in the country and the one most people book.
The Seven Rila Lakes on foot
Chairlift up from Panichishte, then a circuit past the Tear, the Eye and the Kidney at around 2,500 metres. Weather turns fast up there, and the good operators carry the extra layer you did not pack.

Bulgaria’s communist decades, on the ground where they happened.
Buzludzha was finished in 1981 as the Bulgarian Communist Party’s monument house, on a peak that already carried an 1868 battle memorial and the site of the 1891 meeting at which Bulgarian socialism was founded. The party lost power in 1989 and the building was left; it is sealed now and viewed from outside. In Sofia the same forty-five years are still legible — the Largo, the Museum of Socialist Art, and a walking route past the buildings that ran the country.

On the Bulgarian coast the day is a boat, a fish lunch and a walled town.
Nessebar is a UNESCO peninsula of medieval churches and timber houses joined to the mainland by a causeway; Sozopol is the quieter version of the same idea. Off Sunny Beach and Sveti Vlas the catamarans go out twice a day, and the four-hour fishing trips come back with lunch already cooked.

Bulgaria drinks a wine list almost nobody exports.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus is named after this country and plenty of households still culture their own. Rakia is distilled in villages and has a museum of its own in Sofia. And the Melnik grape — broad-leaved, thick-skinned, grown on the sand cliffs of the far south-west — barely leaves the border. Most tastings here run two to three hours.

Borovets and Bansko run for five months, then stop.
The two big resorts hold nearly all of Bulgaria’s winter product and none of it operates in summer. Lessons, multi-day equipment rental and snowshoe days are the bookings that matter here, and they cost a fraction of the Alps.
